Relationships are HARD
I often hear my clients say things like this when they start therapy:
“I feel so frustrated with my partner— they don’t get it.”
“Why do we keep getting stuck when we argue? Communicating feels impossible!”
“We’re basically roommates at this point; we don’t connect like we used to anymore.”
“I’m so tired. The kids take everything out of us, we have nothing left for each other.”
“Work is kicking my ass and all my partner gets at the end of the day are the worst parts of me: grumpy, anxious, exhausted. I know that’s not fair, how do I fix this?”
“My mom is my best friend, but we fight all the time.”
“I love her but she doesn’t get me.”
“My mom only reaches out to me when she needs something.”
“I don’t know, I never really had a relationship with my mom.”
“She had her own traumas! I know she did the best she could, but I feel like I’m the one breaking the pattern.”
“Love may have been present with my mom, but emotional companionship often was not.”
“I wish I was closer to my mom but she expects me to confide in her and then uses the information I share with her against me.”
I love my mom…and…
I find a lot of people struggle when reflecting on their relationship with their mother
